Work across the schools in your district

How a District Admin moves between their schools, what changes when they do, and how to add a new school to the district.

Updated

If you administer a district rather than a single school, Gradebox opens on your district view: every school in the district, side by side. From there you step into any one of them and get the full Admin Portal for that school — the same screens, the same abilities, as if you were that school's own admin.

Only a District Admin sees any of this. Gradebox assigns the role when your district is set up; see School roles explained.

Your district view

Signing in lands you on the district view, which lists your schools with:

  • Teachers — active staff accounts at that school
  • Students — students enrolled with those teachers
  • Avg Proficiency — the school's average across every standard scored so far

The four cards along the top total the same figures across the district.

These are the same numbers each school's own dashboard shows, so a figure here and a figure inside a school will always agree.

Open a school

Click any row. Gradebox switches you into that school and opens its Admin Portal dashboard.

From that point on you are working in that school: Teachers, Students, Classes and every analytics screen show that school's data and nothing else. Anything you change — inviting a teacher, importing a roster, building a class — belongs to that school.

Move between schools

The school name at the top-left of the Admin Portal is a menu. Open it to:

  • jump back to District view
  • switch straight to another school — the one you're in has a tick beside it
  • Add school

Switching reloads Gradebox so nothing from the previous school is left on screen. It takes a moment, and then every screen is showing the school you picked.

You are in one school at a time. There is no screen that mixes two schools' students or classes together — the district view is where the schools sit side by side.

Add a school

  1. Open the school menu at the top-left and click Add school.
  2. Give the school a name. Two schools in a district are allowed to share a name, so name it however your district refers to it.
  3. Optionally pick the state or national standards the school teaches. This just decides which list teachers open on when they create a class; you can change it later, and each class still picks its own subject framework.
  4. Click Add school and set it up.

The school joins your district immediately and Gradebox takes you into it and starts the setup guide — standards, staff, students and classes. See Set up your school with the setup guide for what each step does.

You don't have to finish setup in one sitting. The school already exists, so you can switch away and come back to it from the school menu whenever you like.

What a District Admin can't do

  • Move a school out of your district, or delete one. Contact Gradebox support.
  • Create another District Admin. The role isn't in the role dropdowns on Teachers, and a School Admin can't remove a District Admin either.
  • Work in a school outside your district. Only the schools in your district appear in the menu.
